Since starting to work with wood and build furniture from wood in the early 1990's we have focused on growing our expertise and expanding our depth of knowledge as it pertains to this ancient art of working with wood.  We have acquired a great deal of experience and have studied and worked in many different formats, but every piece we make is inherently different, and something new is almost always learned.

Early on, Joinery Furniture did start with conventional screws and nails, but quickly migrated to basic joinery by studying and building Shaker style furniture.  As the experience built up and all the flaws to the many forms of assembly were slowly learned, our preferences and focus changed dramatically about 25 years ago when we started to study Japanese joinery, and all the different forms of working with the medium.

We have always looked for the right types, or cuts of wood, and quickly discovered that the more we thought about reflecting and highlighting the natural artistry in the tree itself, the more beautiful the piece became.
