Wood Selection

At Joinery Furniture, we can either design your piece around the slab of wood, or find the wood which best meets the space or the design.  We use both domestic and imported wood slabs, many of which retain their natural edges, giving us the ability to make artistic pieces. Our craftsmanship often features book-matched designs, utilizing two to four slabs at a time to highlight the beauty of a specific tree, ensuring a cohesive and stunning result. Each piece is thoughtfully crafted, with bases made from the same wood as the tabletop, seamlessly tying the design together.

This process is frequently very artistic, as we select the wood in the rough, looking to see the beauty of the finished piece in a raw piece of rough-cut wood that has been drying for more than 5 years.  Work with us in this process and experience the artistry and natural elegance that separates Joinery Furniture from its peers..

Selection Of Wood

The color of the wood often plays a key role.  Major colors are;

  • Light Brown

  • Dark Brown/Black

  • Strong Reds

  • White/yellow

  • Blends of colors

If making a room tie together through the theme of the furniture is a goal, clients frequently choose to make groupings of pieces from the same species of wood.  If you want the furnishings to enhance the decore, reach out and let us know how you want it to feel.

Most imported woods are imported in the rough, but they are usually Quarter Sawn with Top cuts or Quarter-sawn with a dense 'ribbon-grain'.  All of these types of cuts have different appearances, strengths, and limitations.  The aesthetic you are searching for is heavily impacted by these decisions.

The choices you have are impacted by way the tree was felled.

  •  Older trees are frequently felled and sawn into large slabs, retaining their natural edges.

  •  Other boards are generally quarter-sawn and dried in large factories, and are then cut into boards to to maximize the efficiency of the shipping

We specialize in working with slabs, which retain the natural edge of the tree, are usually thicker (2-6" thick), longer, and much wider than any milled woods.  For artistic pieces of large furniture these are an excellent option

Wood comes in a wide range of color, hardness (durability) and size

Selection process for the wood depends on how important a role its might play.  In tables, the cuts of the wood, the grain patterns and the color can play a very important role, justifying a trip to the mills that fell the trees to see it before you select it!
