Restoration of 1930's Nakashima Chair
The chair was brought to me by a client that had purchased the piece made by George Nakashima fairly early in his career. The piece had slowly failed over the years as the hide glue that was likely used dried and cracked as the wood expanded and contracted over the same time period.
To properly restore the chair, the client had to let us know their preferences. Did they want to retain the natural working signs of its age, or completely refinish the piece. The client elected to follow Nakashima's preferences, and lightly refinish it while fully restoring the joints.
